fun with gifs

thought about the whole kindle thing and how this would work there, because theres the potential for animated illustrations in screen based texts

i made him do a lil blink

if it doesnt take too long I may try to do this with the rest
would it be a better idea to make the ephemera for the box kit OR to animate the illustrations to make the distribution wider and make it more relevant than an ephemera based book
tutorial questions

can you put gifs in an issuu?

textured circle options

I think i like the lighter texture best

shadows?

added some shadows in the same shade as the neck
i quite like it
gives it more depth
less flat

is the circle too flat and plain?

drawing db cooper

working entirely in photoshop using the colours I planned in my mock up book
I like them but i dont know if i should
oh well

big splooshy brush for background circle
trying to make my use of the colours evenly placed
alas theres nothing at the top of the face that could be red

tried red striped background and it was awful

blushy cheeks?

with cheek lines?

nope just cheek lines i think, although the blushies did even out the red

neck in white on lower opacity, keeps face shape better than white neck and coloured defining line

yellow under eyes seemed to work

collars look lacking in some way, tried white outlines but it made no sense

mock up

I made this mock up to get a better idea of how i want everything to look
i decided i wanted to do fewer stories so I could spend less time doing research and more time drawing
i cut it down to five stories from ten which meant i could also get rid of some of the stories I wasn't sure were suitable for a younger audience and ones I couldn't think of a good way to present
now i'm left with what i think are the best stories for this purpose
I drew quick plans of how i want the illustrations to look and roughly where they will sit. this is subject to change
i picked the colours based on some pencils i was playing with in a different sketch book
here's what I narrowed it down to

just need to figure out how all the sketches will fit to these
i think jack the ripper is most troublesome
maybe it could be more flexible
anyhoo
heres the mock up i made
for some reason it pdf'd so that all the pages are a double page, so each page is two pages

Evaluation

Overall I think responsive has been a very useful and enjoyable module with moments of hellishness. It's been a valuable exercise to actually put my work in the outside world into real competitions and answering real briefs because it's really quite different to working to college briefs. There's more freedom of choice but tighter restrictions with formats and deadlines and concepts and colours and it has to appeal to a whole new set of people each time. The audience is actually an audience of real people instead of an abstract audience I made up for my hypothetical project. The people seeing this work are real and it has to appeal to them or it will be unsuccessful, which was something very daunting at first and I think I learnt that most at Thoughtbubble. It doesn't matter if you think the work you produced is good or not, it matters if the people who it's made for actually like it, and thats a difficult balance to achieve, making something I'm happy with, in the time available that meets the brief and appeals to the actual existing audience. I think I failed to do this most at Thoughtbubble but following that I started to get the hang of it with subsequent briefs. Looking back at the work I actually exhibited at Thoughtbubble I can hardly believe I allowed myself to sell such scrappy unfinished work because I definitely wouldn't now, so at least my own standards for my finished work have improved. Also it's a new experience to have a running dialogue with somebody who the work is being made for because they can ask for changes to be made and I have to make them or they won't want the work, unlike college where advice about changes is at my discretion.
It has been satisfying though to see the tangible product of my efforts on websites and in print and through receiving payment of some kind for doing work. It's very stressful and confusing to have to consider so many different deadlines at one time so it's meant this module had multiple times the stress of a normal one because I've had the mad deadline rush about eight times. I have improved slightly at meeting deadlines as a result, but only slightly It also has made me more accustomed to the pressure and showed me that I can make work for a tight deadline in a small amount of time, which was another positive attribute of this module. It made me churn out work faster than I'd like to so I got results faster and it was nice to build up a body of work over a relatively short space of time. The tightness of time also made me try a few different working processes to get the work done quickly and to a good standard, so I think I've done sone useful experimentation with the way I make images and now I have more options to choose from when drawing.
I think my most successful submission was my Save the Children YCN brief, probably because I spent the most time on it but I'm almost entirely happy with how it turned out, except for the cover where the illustration is rushed and the mandatory font is hideously ugly. This was where I got very into drawing digitally which has been quite a strong aspect of this module for me. I made over half of my entries entirely in Photoshop and the rest were drawn by hand and completed in Photoshop. As a result of this I think my Photoshop skills have improved a lot and I've learnt many a new trick that's helped me refine my process and increase my productivity. I had a brief digital backlash around Easter when I realised I was putting so much effort into making my digital images look natural and handmade when I could just cut out the middleman and actually draw. This is when I made most of the watercolour painted briefs but after doing too much painting I decided neither option was to be chosen over the other and I should refine the way I use both processes together harmoniously, which is what I was really trying to do with the Film Doo posters. I think I'm at a stage now where I can start to combine all of my processes to make work that looks how I want it to, with both the slickness of a digital drawing and the craft and textural gestural nature of an analogue drawing.
My biggest failing in this module was probably, as always, my time keeping. There were countless competitions I wanted to enter where I would look back at the website to reread the brief and realise the deadline had already passed, or was in two hours. This meant I didn't get to respond to all of the briefs I would've liked to, particularly the RSA Animate brief, among many others. I think I've still improved at this though because prior to now having so many deadlines across the module would have been disastrous for me as I struggle to keep track of a lot of events happening in quick succession and I don't always prioritise my tasks wisely. I managed to keep on top of it enough to complete the required amount of briefs within the allotted time and I did this entirely through list making.
This module has also made it apparent how lacking my skills at anything vaguely graphic design related are. I struggled to place text on posters and format my images with features they needed that weren't part of the design and I am quite poor at making boards. Learning and practising making boards was useful because it's a concise way to present work without hauling around a pile of paper and sketchbooks. It makes the work I have in development stages easier to evaluate because its all together, as often in the early stages of a project the work seems so abstract like it isn't heading anywhere because it's all sketches and lose ideas, but having to format all of that progress into physical boards makes work easier to consider. I am still bad at making boards though, I find I don't know where to put anything and it ends up cluttered and confused looking, but I'm sure it's something I'll get more practise at.
If we were to do this module again I would definitely start working on it earlier in the year so I could get to enter all of the competitions I wanted to and as a result easter would not be such mad rush of trying to complete briefs on time. I would also spend more time on my entires so I could feel like I stand a chance at winning something, but I think this is probably just the beginning of this kind of work for me as I definitely want to continue submitting work to things over summer when I have the time to complete things to a standard I can be satisfied with.

Final Project Boards

this board didnt like being in the pdf

Project Report

The Allure of Chanel

This was my entry for the Pushkin Press Allure of Chanel book cover. I didn't bother to mention this entry in boards or the project report because it's the worst thing I've made for a long time. Mostly I'm just proud I got it done in under an hour, research and planning included. I remembered on the day of the deadline that I wanted to enter this competition, so I had to draw this in a Travelodge under lamplight in the small hours of the morning.
I didn't have time left to do any real research or even skim the transcript of the book so I went with the only thing about Chanel, and thats the Chanel suit marge wears in The Simpsons
A google image search told me this was accurate so I drew the outfit in photoshop (modelled on the one Coco Chanel wore) filling a rectangular frame as fast I as I could. It got done but it definitely suffered a lot from my negligence.
But hey I got a piece of work done in less than an hour, woop

Time planning

I mostly plan my time through making to do lists incessantly.
Here are some of them

Wedding Card

completed wedding card design
then i added confetti and some texture and made it the correct format to print a card

I made the envelope an a4 piece of card folded over with a band to secure it, mostly because I couldn't get to the print resource in time to print out a larger envelope, but i like this design anyway

Humans of Leeds UUUBERPOST

I forgot to blog all of this brief so here it is in its entirety.

The facebook group Humans of Leeds put out a request for illustrators to design new cover photos for the group to keep it fresh and such. I thought this was probably a good think to respond to since the group has like 13000 likes, which is a lot of people looking at my drawings.

I messaged the group and started a now running dialogue about the project with someone called Z who was very enthusiastic and supportive about my work and understood also the other work I was doing at the same time so left the deadline open.

I started off with some quick sketches of people photographed for humans of leeds with captions of their quotes. They were very loose as I did them on the train but it was a start.

Then I made some more detailed and sustained water colour drawings of some of the people. I think these look nice but there was no logical way for me to use them as part of a banner image.

Humans of Leeds part 2

issuu and html problems have caused this to be two posts

so after I decided the watercolour drawings weren't much use I drew this watercolour and coloured pencil drawing depicting some of the humans of leeds in a typical leeds terraced street

I didn't actually finish it because at this point I realised it wasn't working well as an image, because its scattered and illogical and poorly framed.
The best part was the houses at the top so I cropped the image, added a sky and some text on Photoshop and ended up with this which i think is much better

When I went to send the image I realised I hadn't made it to the correct proportions of a photoshop banner so I had to crop it to this instead

which isn't much different but the text may be a little too big now

I made this profile picture very quickly, it was just a vague idea i'd planned and it went okay first time so I went with this.

This brief was fun to do because it was quite simple, except for the painting dilemmas, and I'm pleased with how it turned out after the cropping and whatnot
I may make some more over summer and send those too

dancing plague research

specific instance of dancing mania

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_mania

http://www.csicop.org/si/show/rethinking_the_dancing_mania

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=wb_UMcH5C7EC&pg=PA678&lpg=PA678&dq=jean+russell+dancing+plague&source=bl&ots=m6OllwmYOX&sig=nLa2CLvSdxFOpNLjjdGwZzY6gbU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=rvg0VbS2MMaR7Abv84HICg&ved=0CCcQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=jean%20russell%20dancing%20plague&f=false

first instance in 1374
most prominent (dancing plague) july 1518 in strasbourg
started by woman frau troffea
over 400 people dancing for a month
people dancing inseccently until death from heart failure and exhaustion
no cure or understanding of occurcences even now
thought the cure would be to dance more, problem caused by hot blood but dancing deemed more helpful than bleeding
often got bands to play to help ward of the mania but it mostly just encouraged others to join in
thought to be a mass psychogenic illness or a prayer ritual of a group of travellers spread across the area

movements, to draw, described as jumping leaping linked with clothes clapping singing embracing each other, some in pairs with a third person

CONDENSING

Due to constraints of time I've decided to condense the work I'm doing by reducing it from 10 mysteries of two pages each to 6 mysteries of 4 pages each. This means my total amount of pages will be 28, so I can make it saddle bound instead of perfect bound, which will reduce the production time.

Also it means I won't spend any more time researching and rewriting the stories to get the correct facts, this takes the most time so by removing 4 of the mysteries I have less background work to do to make each image.

I will spread the information out more across the pages so it will be clearer and less rushed and squashed. I'll have a simple title page for each mystery, then a double page spread of larger and more spaced out text with spot illustrations within of people involved or scenes or anything relevant, and on the following page the full page illustration about the whole story. Then the page after that will be the next title page and so on.

On the inner cover pages I will make a pattern and have a contents page and an ending summary of sorts over the pattern.

SKETCH OF

The cover is undecided.
I'm going to use a limited palette of around 4 colours but may use them overlayed at lower opacities to create more. At the minute the palette is as such, but I'm undecided

Variations

Eilean mor research

Light house people went to investigate lighthouse
found it in a state of disarray suggesting struggle and fleeing
2 of three oilcoats missing
log records terrible conditions, emotionally disturbed lighthouse men
three men missing
no reports of bad weather at that time and place
men never found, no solid explanation given
since people have reported voices and creepy goings on

Flannan Isles on google earth, where lighthouse is situated

very distorted view of lighthouse just visible in bright white area

better images of the lighthouse, confusion as to whether eilean glas lighthouse was the same one, I don't think it is so I won't make it red

SCAN IN PLANS

I'm planning an image focusing on the phantom storms so I will draw the lighthouse encircled by violent waves but I will experiement with the waves making them translucent as if to appear 'ghostly'
showing the actual weather being pleasant

some crashing waves around lighthouses

crashing waves on my 505 pinterest board

funny video with some useful information

tigerprint patterns

Follow Hollie's board Pattern on Pinterest.

i made this circle pattern initially to submit but it looked bizarre so i ended up using it as a gallery of patterns I could paint into other pieces of work
i got the idea from pinterest, it was pretty fun, but not very applicable

i made these patterns to layer together on photoshop, its just some coloured pencil spots and small watercolour brush strokes

i tried a few different colours but went for the pale yellow because it was most spring themed

i added this scatter brush on top which may have been silly but i like it, it looks less empty

tigerprint bugs

I made this pattern for the tigerprint make your mark competition
I'd been drawing bugs for my offlife comic when rowena pointed out they'd make a good pattern
so I painted them in watercolour with a small square tipped brush
it took a lot of concentration because they were really small and i don't tend to do stuff like this that requires ones head to be millimetres away from the page.
it was fun though, therapeutic, and the forms of bugs are fun to invent after basic research
I found the shape of my brush lended itself well to certain parts, like the wings, but less so to doing anything round or dot-like
i intended to do the whole page but this small section took long enough

I scanned the drawing in and changed the levels and hue saturation so it was crisper and brighter, then i repeated the pattern, which took a while because i didnt paint it with repeating in mind so its quite irregularly shaped
in the end i got it looking okay and changed the background to a warmer orange
i think it looks quite summery, warm colours and bugs, thats my view of summer at least
eventhough the brief was spring time themed
bugs are out in spring so it still works
i like this pattern i think its cute, and i like the variation in tone the watercolour makes throughout one stroke/shape

Threadless sublimation

in progress

I submitted this design to Threadless' sublimation print competition because I think it would work well as an all over print tshirt, which isnt usually a service offered
I drew this pattern on a porcelain bowl on holiday and I liked it so I wanted a neater and more reusable digitally drawn version
it was very nice to draw because its repetetive but each person is dancing differently so it didnt get boring for a while
i intended to draw every person necessary to fill the page but it was taking forever so I ended up repeating the pattern i had already drawn
there was a lot of rejigging and jostling to be done and it still looks a little cluttered but its much better
its been approved for voting now and someone just commented, how very exciting

QWERTEE submission

I made this to submit to qwertee because they seem to exclusively sell popular culture reference tshirts so i might as well jump on the bandwagon

its just a drawing of this scene from once more with feeling, the musical episode of buffy
this is anya singing about her distrust of bunnies (because she used to be a demon so shes weird)

I did this very quickly so it looks pretty bad

theres a limit of six colours which helped reign in what i was doing

the shadow at the bottom balances out the text at the top but I cant stop thinking it looks like theyre all standing in a puddle

the design i would deem an overall failure, except for the bunnies which are adorable.

lets see what the qwertee voters think
