Completed Cat zine
Here is the completed cat zine based on my screen printed cat comic from Foundation.
I'm happy with how it turned out because I retained what I liked about the old image whilst updating all of the imagery so that I'm happy with it.
As well as changing the compositions and style of the imagery I had to change the text to past tense (which was very depressing) and change the appearence of the boyfriend.
I think it will be well suited to Thoughtbubble because people like cats and will pay attention to things they recognise, like cats.
I particularly like the cover, it's bold and decorative with slight tombstone-esque morbidity.

grand budapest
dont think i ever actually posted this
anyway heres the poster i made for the film societys first event, we started with grand budapest hotel, i couldnt really remember what happened so i just spliced two images together from the movie that seemed memorable, kinda lazy but i just wanted to get something done, and i did, and i think it went okay

Rationale
|
||
I want to make silly funny pictures to make me happy and make
other people happy.
This will make people more inclined to buy my work, or hire
me, as people like to be happy.
As a result I will get the money they buy my work or employ
me with and can use it to enrich my life with the joy of pets and an
elaborate home library with a rolling ladder.
|
||
Themes / Subjects
|
||
Silliness, humour, irreverence, narrative based mostly on the
banality of existence, character, observation, whatever subject is
interesting me most at the time
|
||
Products / Methods of Distribution
|
||
Zines, comics, printed media, posters, postcards, ephemera,
crafts, badges, stickers all selling at table top fairs and conventions
Also online distribution via social media
|
||
Practical Skills / Media / Formats
|
||
Mixture of traditional and digital, some all of either, some
mixed, Photoshop for creation or titivation, watercolour, gouache, other
paints, pencil, pens, ink and brush linework, collage,
Whatever seems most appropriate and/or enjoyable for the
brief
Occaisional straying into video/gif format with animated
work, would much like to further this
|
Brief 1: Thoughtbubble
|
Deadline
|
14/11/15
|
Rationale:
I want to make zines, prints and ephemera to sell on my table
at Thoughtbubble. This will aid me in networking and building a presence in
the community as well as allow me to sell my work to the right audience, and
as a result I may become more known in the field over time as well as making
money from sales to recoup my costs and enjoy some tasty profit.
|
||
Brief 2: Album Re-Covers
|
Deadline
|
19/05/16
|
Rationale:
I want to re-design the covers of the homemade CDs I found in
Poverty Aid because some of the music is quite good but the badly handmade
covers make them look dated and unappealing. This will make them appealing to
a wider modern audience and as a result the CDs will become more marketable
and I can send the new covers to the people who made the albums, which might
be a nice surprise, and if they so choose the album could be re-distributed
with my new cover.
|
||
Brief 3: YCN
|
Deadline
|
tbc
|
Rationale: I want to enter an applicable
YCN competition because the deadline is after January so it will be less
horrendously stressful than others, and because winning would potentially
provide further opportunities and a widened audience. This will make it easier
for me to get a job as I will have that on my CV.
|
||
Brief 4: Macmillan Prize
|
Deadline
|
Tbc, May
|
Rationale: I want to make and propose pages
of a children’s book because I think it would suit my work and I haven’t done
anything specifically for children yet. Also I would like to further explore
the heady-leggy character I’ve been working with but in the form of a full
narrative. This will give me a product I can add to my portfolio and as a
result I can pitch the book to publishers, or even win.
|
||
Brief 5: Board Game
|
Deadline
|
19/05/15
|
Rationale: I want to collaborate in making
an illustrated board game because I have an interest in this but feel often
the imagery is unappealing. Also I think it would be very enjoyable to make
and there will be few if any opportunities to do this in future. This will
give us a complete functioning product that can be played and pitched to
shops and companies, and as a result the game may be manufactured or sold,
and failing that we will have something fun to play with and to attempt to
sell ourselves.
|
||
Additional Project Proposals
Film society posters – regularly
Illustration Friday – regularly
Threadless competitions – when applicable
Art cat café business proposal – dependent on input of others
Fumetto Comix – dependent on free time before deadline,
4/1/16
Working Toy Theatre – potential board game substitute
Musical comics -
perhaps in conjunction with toy theatre, or smaller scale if needed/if
time

recoverin zines
so to minimize my work load im recovering lots of my old zines cos theyre not bad but the covers suck
heres some sketches for bad trends
also i was looking up bad trensds again to try and incorporate some that happened since a wrote it (what a weird thought, time has passed) and i found this esquire article
http://www.esquire.co.uk/style/article/6087/worst-mens-fashion-trends-in-history/
which i thought was funny, as it encompassed all of history, which made me think about a sequal
somehting like
Bad Trends 2: The Revenge of the Ruff
or whatever
i dont have time now though
but it would be funnnnnn
maybe if i find time somewhere
nah theres no way i have three weeks

cat zine progressin
finally finished travelling man
it is done
eeeee
ugh
pastel palooza is my new tool of choice, thanks kyle webster
we had the palette of travelling mans branding to stick to, which are basically my favourite colours anyway
my planning was minimal because i wanted to get it done soon but that kinda backfired cos i got really into it
also since its in keeping with the context of the heady leggy comic im making for thoughtbubble I'm going to give out postcard prints of this with purchases of the comic, hense it is part of my 603 brief
I'm really happy with how it turned out
The pinks work well, even if they do look more like blossom than autumn
I think the extra time I spent on it paid off
as did the decision to use a lot of reference imagery for the backgrounds
Not sure why i don't usually do that but i think i will
I really like the posture in the third panel, i got it exactly how I imagined it
I am annoyed however that I didn't realise I'd written glorious twice until after printing
It was meant to be fabulous
oh well

Cat Zine Process
I'm using different textured brushes, mostly a combination of Kyle Websters Pastel Palooza and Chunky Charcoal to get the digital analogue hybrid aesthetic I like.
I'm working in monochrome so nothing is lost when I print it out
This means heavy importance on the balance of black white and grey, notan and whatnot
I'm doing one panel per page to pace it evenly.
Here's page one
Heres the first stage, black outlines, loose textured ones.
Then writing, I'm all about cursive script at the miunte, it's improving but there's a way to go.
And all together
Yep I think it's going alright.
It's pretty simple but it does the job, I like it
And it's a nice change working in monochrome, not done that in a while.

Cat zine
So i'm remaking a screen print i did in foundation about my cat, but as a zine now, because he died and the end was about that so it seemed kinda relevant, also my mum kinda bullied me into it.
..but cats sell at thoughtbubble, and this may end up being my zine brief zine, or maybe ill still make that a sketchbook one and ditch all the fan art I was gonna do. Stupid fan art.
Doing digital due to pressing deadlines
At time of writing T minus 24 days
i can do this
yeahhhh
last year i did it in a week
it was terrible, but this year i have like 3 weeks and ive already started
so it'll be fiiiiinee
front cover
(trying to put more work into my covers than last year, covers are important)

Heady Leggy Plan
For my comic I just want a simple story, like the poster but expanded, where he's just going about the world discovering things humourously.
I don't want to make a rigid panelled comic, mostly because it takes literally forever so I'm going to go for a looser sequential arrangement with no real borders, a little bit like Dotter of her Fathers Eyes, but much less lovely probably.
EG
I like how it clearly flows in a direction and order but looks like one cohesive image on the page, not broken up like panelling.
Let's have another one
mmm tasty
I want to read this again I read it when it first came out but I don't remember much of it except the panelling, im not sure i fully appreciated it at the time, i remember being a bit bored by it. I must've been wrong

Cat zine plans
Cat screen print
Found this screen print at home
Made it in foundation about my cat
well my mum got it out cos the cat died and she thought I might wanna sell them/see them, and she wants to put one up now
There's so many horrible errors in it though
So I need to remake it
I'm going to make it into a zine to sell at thoughtbubble, people love cats.

Old work to reprint
So because I had such a short deadline I'm going to reuse some work I've already done to pad out my table.
This includes my comics from the previous thoughtbubble, Bad Trends, Gianttess, Pegasus, Stupid Deaths and Men of Tinder, as well as my Posters from Responsive last year for Ferris Beuller, Cabaret and Harold and Maude.

Thoughtbubble Plans
We've just been informed that due to a cancellation we have a table at Thoughtbubble this year
Woooooooo.
Well it's four weeks away now, would've been nice to have that a little earlier, but anyway yay.
So this is going to form my first brief for 603.
I will be making new zines and prints to sell
Not sure if I will succomb to fan art yet.
I'd rather not but it might be necessary.
I'll also use the zine Matt's brief requested to sell on my table, so I'm going to make this a more involved piece of work than I previously intended.
Very concerned about how this may affect cop, being at the same time as it, but I think there is just enough time to manage it.

third guardian
forgot to blog it the third guardian
here it is
revival of arts and crafts in a digital world
i got pretty literal
hes sweeping away computers with a brush
makes it okay cos theres a heady leggy so im allowed to be heavy handed and stupid cos hes so silly
pile of computers is hard to draw
i had to use sooo much reference so closely
this is the main one i used
can yer tell
i used another texture on the bristles.
im still not sure if it fits with the image
mightve looked better drawn
but its good to try new stuff
is it ironic that this illustration about the revival of craft was made entirely digitally?
yeah thought so

accidental illustration friday
i was going through my sketchbook to find stuff to scan in and digitize, make some finished looking stuff with minimal effort and that, so i was doing this one
and while trying to decide what he should be falling past i remembered illustration fridays theme this week was
STARS
so i drew him falling through the night sky and entered it

Travelling Man Plans
These are my rough sketches for travelling man.
I havent thought much about it because there is no time and I'm also trying to do cop so yeah I'm just going straight for it with this one.
He's walking through the woods all bendy floopy and enjoying the nature and some leaves fall on him.
It's basic as hell it'll be great.
I'm working digitally for speed and also I'm in love with this Kyle Webster brush Pastel Palooza
It builds the perfect texture
Look how cool
I'm using the palette in different opacities to allow me an array of pinks
I'm sure this fits in. If they were the ink colours in use it would be no extra inks, so it's fine.
This is the first panel done
Really enjoying this, like it a lot, its the best looking thing I've done in a while
This is my sketch
I used a lot of reference for the angles, that's something I don't do a lot but I think it has helped the backgrounds significantly. Background seems to be becoming a focus in this drawing.
These are the reference pictures I used for the trees
