Flying creatures

I want to make a little zine type book of a pegasus flight, much like these excessively majestic references.

Thats Pants - Poster

This is the final image we made, it took the form of a poster promoting recycling so we imitated the styles of such posters. Because of factors like weather and illness we ended up not having time to create the image we planned so we had to use a frame from the gif. We chose this one because it was the endpoint the gif reached so the only one that made sense as a stand alone image. We had to redraw the recycling symbol as on the day of the shoot it had become blurred by the rain. the text was inspired by looking at posters and we took a stat from our initial research.
As a group we agreed this poster was not a great success, especially compared with the gif. It ended up communicating a completely different idea to what we originally planned and became much more serious and less fun than the other poster would have been. It was planned to show how annoying the packaging is to receive and open but instead its a slightly confused recycling campaign, as without the context of this being an unwrapped box it makes much less sense than the gif. I think had we allowed more time for the poster we could have made something better and much more representative of our initial opinions. Also following an error in booking digital printing times we failed to produce an A2 version of the image, instead settling for A3. This was perhaps also due to the limited time we did the poster in as by that point it was too late to book and the room was unexpectedly closed on the day we wanted to print.

That's Pants - GIF

This is our final gif. We decided to chose the idea of the parcel unwrapping itself. It ended up being less or an ordeal than I originally anticipated. We collected boxes with ease from around the collage, then roughly planned how they would be stacked within each other and what shots we were going to take, then went to Hyde Park and had all the pictures taken within an hour. The freezing rain didn't help as we had to work extra fast to avoid the boxes disintegrating, and we had to put a plastic bag over the camera to protect it, but we managed it and the boxes remained in tact with the exception of a few muddy footprints.
After taking the photographs we had to arrange them into a gif, which at first was quite straight forward but then we encountered problems whilst saving it for the web and had to consult the technician who fixed our errors.
Overall I think we were all pleased with how the gif turned out. It displays our points of both how wasteful the packaging is and how irritating it is to open. We introduced a hint of irony by making the object a recycling key ring, which raises another issue which is related to the topic. I'm pleased with the stop motion-esque aesthetic we achieved as well, I think it makes it more lively and interesting than if it had been a person unwrapping the box.
It was strange to work as part of a group because there were other people affected by my actions, or lack thereof, so I think it made me more productive as I didn't want to drag everyone else down or be that annoying group member who does nothing. There was a lot less to do though because all of the tasks were split between four people so I often felt like I wasn't doing much, but it gave me time to work on other projects and drawing for fun ( a rare treat). It was good to have four different people contributing ideas too, as we all had different thought processes so it meant that we had plenty ideas in very little time, and it was fun to pursue an idea I would have never chosen if working alone, and in a completely unfamiliar medium because it meant the results were nothing like the work any of us usually create.

Red and blue sketchbook

Some recent brain sploodge, mostly horses and occaisional ladies.
(excuse the terrible quality of my phone camera, they honestly looked better on the little screen...)

I plan to use these horses in the next visual language brief for transport

HORSES

Following my bordering-obsessive recreational drawing of horses I've chosen to base my visual language project on them, or perhaps Pegasus's. Here's an ongoing collection of nice horse and pegasus drawings people have done.  (also the google image search for Pegasus is majestic as heck.)
history of disney horses, very cutesy

Adeventure Time - episode The Eyes, very silly little horse

Ping Zhu - movement, textured lines, power horse

Luke Pearson - character, humour, colour, warped horses

That's Pants

In the first session my group had trouble trying to think of an idea. The one we began with was trying to make someone jump but its the wrong person. We made quick notes and a confusing equation about this but by the next meeting agreed that this topic made no sense and would never work. We gathered some ideas and brainstormed together and eventually decided on bad packaging.
Here are some kinds of bad packaging we've experienced.

We sorted them into categories

Here's some research we did to try and make bad packaging sound like a more serious issue. There are a surprising amount of injuries caused by packaging each year.

Here's some basic ideas we noted down.

Roughs of a gif wherein we try to attack a can of corned beef but are flung away by it's extreme resilience. Also posters related to can opening injuries.

The plan for our actual gif. We decided to focus on excessive, wasteful packaging. This plan shows a parcel unwrapping itself through layers of packaging in a stop-motion effect. Inside we planned to have a really small item to show how pointless the excess packaging is.

Here is our chosen poster design. We planned to have one of us photographed in a pile of parcel unwrappings triumphantly holding their prize. Some text would display a waste stat and a catchphrase like these kinds of campaigns would have.

Viewpoint and Depth - Three figures (also etching)

Once again I wasted a bunch of time trying to think of a decent concept and ended up doing nothing, so I drew what I could see in front of me, which was incidentally three figures at differing depths from a viewpoint.
I tried some variations on the image as people kept moving about, and I tried some different viewpoints, and considered a third figure being in the TV.

Continued trying different arrangements of components off the room, omitting pieces of furniture and changing peoples positions.
I decided on this arrangement as it seemed the most balanced of the ones I'd tried, but I left the level of detail flexible as I was uncertain how what level of detail I could achieve with etching. I later removed the text  because I couldn't work out how to write it backwards.

The print didn't turn out as well as I thought it would, looking at the plate, perhaps because I forgot it would be backwards so now compared to my planned out sketch it looks strange and unfamiliar. Also the green ink doesnt have much contrast between line and empty space, perhaps I didn't wipe the plate enough. Despite my disappointment I enjoyed the workshop and would like to use engraving again, but it seems to only be suited to certain images because its hard to use multiple colours and it relies on linework.

Frame - Elephant, Butterfly, Me

side view- too basic

trying different concepts, giving elements of image different roles and positions

decided on this image, now finding most harmonious compostion

fine tuning

decided compostion, non A format, later changed for simplicity

final sketch, mostly similar to final

I used a black brush pen and grey watercolour for the final drawing. I think it went quite well and I managed to balance the placement of black and grey quite well, which helps the composition. I tried to make it flow around with the trunk and legs but I'm not sure how successful this was.

Composition

In keeping with my horror movies theme I chose to draw a girl running away from Frankenstein, who has a sad harmless face.
My initial idea was pretty similar to what I ended up doing, except the angle was more dramatic

I tried some different compostitions, the top one was far too dull and would require too much focus on the background, the one below made very little sense.

I tried some silly ones and the same scene I started with from different angles

Again, more angles, and an abstract giant-face-in-the-sky one, none of these were better than my revised intial idea though, so I went with that

I drew it out in brush pen, adding a castle and hills in the background.

Then I scanned it into photoshop and coloured it in. I chose to do it all in blue, despite planning in green, because I started by making the scenery appear like nighttime with the dark blue and then decided to make it monotone. I think its more harmonious this way, it's still quite rough as the shadows and highlights are blocky and the drawing is a bit off, but it turned out pretty decent for a quick brief solution.
